Now that the 5 million inches of snow that we have recieved this winter has finally started to melt, everywhere that is not sidewalk is a mushy, muddy mess. (Especially no fun in high heels )

Now that the 5 million inches of snow that we have recieved this winter has finally started to melt, everywhere that is not sidewalk is a mushy, muddy mess. (Especially no fun in high heels :P )

The biggest casualty of this is my driveway.  As you can see in the picture above, my driveway consists of  “Runners”  aka paved tracks for the tires only, with grass between.  I think they are cute and fit with the overall look and style of an older home.  The concrete for mine is in bad shape and eventually needs to be re-paved.    I had planned to get the driveway re-paved as runners, however the snow of this season has caused me to rethink my plans. 

First, shoveling grass is not fun, because there is a tendency to remove some grass.  Second with all the melting the lawn is muddy/mushy and trying to drive on it if you don’t get your tires aligned to the runners  creates awesome tracks in the lawn.  Right now I have a 3 inch deep rut :(

So in order to avoid this in the future, I think I have decided to re-pave as a fully paved driveway………….. but that project is a ways down the list…. after Siding and Doors.

I am really starting to think I should have taken it as a sign that the first time I saw the house I am currently living in…. there was snow on the ground.

I have never shoveled so much snow in my entire life, than what I have done the last few months… (and its not over … more coming tomorrow :( )

Luckily I fared pretty well.  Power and FIOS stayed up the whole time…. no trees fell on my house…. but some of my neighbors are sagging greatly… I may have some early fun with my Lopper :P

I spent the time napping, tweeting, getting caught up on NetFlix and DVR, and shoveling (oh… and drinking :D ).  I was also way happy not to be stuck in a 2nd floor condo having to listen to the cattle that used to live above me…. :)

Madison fared well also.

Fed is closed today which means I am doing a hybrid of working from home and vacation.  But Metro is still not running above ground service.  Hopefully tomorrow WMATA will be almost back to normal and  I can get into DC for a bit and get a Big Mac :)   My car is staying where it is until after the next storm because while I think I can get out of my spot, I know I wouldn’t be able to back in again….

This was my first major snowstorm as a house owner… and here is what I learned….

1)Don’t back the car all the way back in the driveway. If I had followed what others were doing I would have noticed they were parking as close to the sidewalk as possible… so they would have the least amount to dig out…

2)Don’t go to Ghetto Giant right before a snow storm. It was a mess. All I needed was cat food… and there was only 1 express line open.

3) Buy more Ice Melt. I had one little jug that I was so proud of myself for buying at Target a few weeks ago. It lasted for my front porch and front walk…..I resorted to dumping cat litter on the sheet of ice that is my front sidewalk and driveway… but it is a mess. I’ll try to pick up some more ice melt at 7-11 or CVS today.

4) Put recycle bins and trash cans outside. Mine are now safely tucked in my garage. With an icy sidewalk and 18 inches of snow between us :(

5)Shovel a path from front walk to driveway… I should have done this on Saturday…. Now I have to walk across icy sidewalk and driveway to get to my car and garage

When I was in my condo… all I had to do was dig out my car. SFH may be more work… but the quiet is definitely worth it!!!!
